Employment Fell Y-o-Y in October in All Sectors But Communications

Bratislava, December 9 (TASR) - The sector of information and communications activities was the only area in which employment grew year-on-year in October, the Statistics Office reported on Wednesday.
Employment in information and communications activities rose by 1.5 percent y-o-y. Conversely, the number of employees continued to fall y-o-y in wholesale - 26.7 percent, in restaurants - 21.7 percent, in industry - 17.9 percent, in the sale and maintenance of motor vehicles - 10.6 percent, in selected market services - 8.1 percent, in accommodation - 4.6 percent, in retail - 4.3 percent, in transport and warehouses - 1.1 percent, and in construction - 0.8 percent.
Over the first ten months of 2009, the biggest employer was industry (502,000 people). Other employment figures were: in construction - 184,900, in retail - 155,800, in selected market services - 123,500, in transport and warehouses - 112,200, in wholesale - 109,100 people, in information and communications activities - 37,800, in restaurants - 31,300, in the sale and repair of motor vehicles - 22,900, and in accommodation - 10,300.
