Kosice Region MPs Give Up Bonuses to Bankroll Clear-up After Floods

Bratislava, June 28 (TASR) - The devastating floods that ravaged Kosice region after torrential rain in May and June are estimated to have caused €20.6 million worth of damage to roads, educational and medical facilities, Kosice governor Zdenko Trebula (Smer-SD) told reporters on Monday.

Trebula stated that, in line with a proposal from his Smer colleagues, regional parliamentarians have agreed to forgo their monthly bonuses to fund clear-up work in the aftermath of the floods. They expect major companies doing business in the region such as U.S. Steel and energy distributor Vychodoslovenska energetika to chip in as well.

Trebula also warned of the continued threat of landslides and noted that the state of the roads is hazardous. "We need to get the roads back into their original condition," he said.
