Miklos: EU Guarantee Mechanism No Good Solution, But We're Ready to Talk

Bratislava, June 26 (TASR) - The new guarantee mechanism of the European Union, designed to give a helping hand to countries in financial troubles in future, is not a good solution to problems showing up in the eurozone, according to SDKU-DS vice-chair Ivan Miklos (who is rumoured to become the new finance minister, returning to the post after four years in Opposition).

"I think it's not a good solution, but we're ready for talks, arguments ... and we'll see what will be the upshot," Miklos said on Slovak Radio's weekly debate show 'Sobotne Dialogy' on Saturday.

The Union is currently waiting for Slovakia to sign the framework agreement on the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the new tool to protect economies in the eurozone. The outgoing Government led by Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has refused to sign the unblocking documents without all those involved in the current political guard-changing in Slovakia agreeing on this. The new Coalition (featuring centre-right parties SDKU-DS, SaS, KDH and Most-Hid) said they wouldn't do so before knowing the details of the documents.

Miklos's opponent on the show, the outgoing Finance Minister Jan Pociatek (Smer-SD nominee), said that the emerging new Coalition has already begun to recede from its original, radical stance vis-a-vis EFSF. "In their election campaign they expressly articulated their 'no' to this. I'm curious to see them explaining it when they change their mind," said Pociatek.
