Most-Hid: No Co-operation With Smer-SD

Bratislava, December 9 (TASR) - The Most-Hid Party Republican Council on December 7 concluded that in view of the present circumstances, co-operation with the Smer-SD party isn't an option for the party, which can team up only with "democratic opposition forces", said the party's leader Bela Bugar at a press conference on Wednesday.

He added that some or other scandal linked to the governing parties (Smer, HZDS and SNS) appears almost every week, such as those concerning the Slovak Land Fund's (SPF) manipulation of state land, building reconstruction at the Economy Ministry, or the drawing of Eurofunds. The problematic issues have been topped off by the news that Slovakia was placed third on the list of countries that draw EU funds in the most ineffective way, said the Most-Hid leader.

Bugar also said that the way things are going at the moment, nothing indicates that the situation vis-a-vis Smer could change to make co-operation possible.

An alternative to the current Coalition in the form of co-operation between the ethnic-Hungarian parties (Most-Hid, SMK) and centre-right parties has a precedent from 1997, when the-then three ethnic-Hungarian parties and the Slovak blue-coalition managed to create a joint platform.

Most-Hid wants to propose negotiations between the opposition parties at meeting that is currently being prepared. Bugar said that he isn't afraid of SMK rejecting co-operation, because such a move would be that party's responsibility. He said that parliamentary co-operation between Independents for Most-Hid and SMK MPs functions well.

Even though the party doesn't consider a broad coalition of opposition parties to be realistic at this time, it doesn't rule out any negotiations with either parliamentary or non-parliamentary parties. Most-Hid also holds negotiations with politicians who could strengthen the party especially at the regional level. "These issues were also discussed at the Republican Council," said Bugar.
