Urbani: No Reason to Return MP Mandate

Bratislava, December 9 (TASR) - Independent MP Milan Urbani, who was excluded from the LS-HZDS party on December 5, said on Wednesday that he sees no reason for him to return his MP mandate.

"I won't give up my MP mandate. I said in the past that if I left the party of my own accord I'd return the mandate, and I would have done so. I didn't see any reason to leave HZDS, however," Urbani told TASR.

Urbani was also recalled by Parliament on Wednesday from the post of chairman of the parliamentary European affairs committee and from the post of substitute member of the Permanent Slovak Parliament Delegation to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly.

Urbani said that he tried until the very last moment to work as best he could for HZDS. "I see no reason to return the mandate to a group of people that may want it", he said.

The Independent MP said that many people believed in the party and still believe in it, including him, but inconsistencies have appeared recently that have made the party lose its ability to take action.

He wants to co-operate with HZDS representatives on a "human basis" in the future as well. "I found very many good and hard-working people there and I'm not leaving them," said Urbani, adding that he isn't planning to end his political activities and that he may meet politically with some of his former party colleagues in the future.

"At the moment, I'm not joining any other political party," said Urbani, who wants to prepare a political programme with his colleagues on a non-party basis and present it to the public in the spring of next year. "As an excluded member I feel a completely free man. Therefore, I want to prepare this programme in the coming months with my friends whom I call 'the Council of the Wise', and I want to prepare it without ideology," he added.

HZDS excluded Urbani allegedly for his activities in the European Democratic Party (EDS). Such dual-party practices aren't acceptable for HZDS, said the party's deputy chairman Jozef Habanik. Meciar has already stated that he wants to talk to Urbani regarding him returning his mandate.
