Lajcak: Slovakia to Establish Diplomatic Contacts with Liechtenstein

Bratislava, December 9 (TASR) - Property claims by Liechtenstein from Slovakia are negligible, said Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak on Wednesday after the Government session.

The Government took into consideration a memorandum on establishing diplomatic relations signed between Slovakia and Liechtenstein.

Principality of Liechtenstein was the last of European countries which didn't have diplomatic relations established with Slovakia. The problematic issues for a long time concerned property claims by members of the family of Liechtenstein, which they lost in former Czechoslovakia due to so-called Benes Decrees after 1945.

"We view this as a step towards normalising the mutual relations, which will open a scope for signing basic agreements and open space for trade and cultural co-operation," said Lajcak. The memorandum should be signed on December 21.

Liechtenstein has withdrawn its property claims by which it conditioned establishing diplomatic contact, as Slovakia's international position changed - the country became an EU member, developing mutual co-operation within the European Economic Area, UN and OSCE.
