Dismissed Trencin University Rector To Press Charges Against School

Trencin, December 9 (TASR) - The ruling of the Academic Senate of Alexander Dubcek University in Trencin that I should be removed from my post is illegal, said university rector Miroslav Mecar at a press conference on Wednesday.

The Academic Senate of Trencin University dismissed Mecar from his post at an extraordinary session on Monday.

Mecar refuses to recognise the ruling and intends to file a legal complaint against it. "I've held consultations with lawyers. The extraordinary session of the Academic Senate lacked any legal, substantive and procedural reasons; so we'll also file a lawsuit regarding the way that the Senate's session proceeded," he said, adding that the conflict is about philosophy and not his post.

Education Minister Jan Mikolaj (SNS) has approved the rector's dismissal, but Mecar claims that this is because the minister has only one-sided information at his disposal. "I'll explain the entire issue to the minister in an open letter," he said.

Three senators who saw their academic mandates challenged at the same time have also raised objections in writing against the Academic Senate's ruling. "We regard the elections for the Academic Senate's chair and vice-chair as unlawful. I consider the dismissal of a rector to be an event of great significance in the life of any university; so it's unacceptable to dismiss a rector based on a severe violation of legal norms," said one of the three aforementioned senators Milan Vanc.

The new chairman of the Academic Senate Dusan Holy, who was elected on Monday, disagrees with the arguments of the university management. "Trencin University has 26 senators, five of which weren't in line with the statutes and the University Act. Two students weren't elected by the student part of the academic community and three senators saw their job contracts expire. I see no reason why the senate session should be illegal," he said.
