Flasikova-Benova: Internet Election a Realisable Idea

Bratislava, June 24 (TASR) - Smer-SD MEP Monika Flasikova-Benova told TASR on Thursday that she welcomes the initiative of the incoming centre-right government to enable internet voting in the elections – but only if it is well-prepared, she told TASR.

Flasikova-Benova views this idea as the only realistic commitment in the programmes presented by the four-party coalition. "I see the rest in the category of unachievable," she said, pointing to their intention to adjust rules for all elections in Slovakia under only one Election Act. "It'll certainly be necessary to prepare a certain law on harmonising the large number of elections we have in Slovakia (the general election, presidential election, elections to the higher territorial units/VUC, election to the European Parliament and election to the local councils - ed. note)," she said.

The Smer MEP can't imagine, for example, how the future coalition wants to adjust the vote for local authorities or VUC elections to the general election. "This is an absolutely nonsensical vision," she said.

Another problem to which Flasikova-Benova points to concerns the election to the European Parliament, which has to take place in all EU member states at approximately the same time. "One calendar week is usually set for this. So that I don't know whether they want to do something with the date, or whether they want to unify some elections...," she added.
