Bratislava, June 23 (TASR) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic on Wednesday gave SDKU-DS election leader Iveta Radicova the task of forming a new government.
Gasparovic did so after Robert Fico, chairman of the election winner Smer-SD, returned the mandate that he received on Monday, June 14. Despite gaining 34.79 percent of the vote, Fico's party was unable to form a cabinet.
Radicova told Gasparovic that she had succeeded in finding coalition partners - Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Hid - with whom she is able to form a new government.
"Based on SDKU-DS's mandate, recommending Mrs. Radicova for this position, I've given her a mandate to attempt to form a new government," said Gasparovic after meeting with representatives of the centre-right parties. She has accepted the task, and the deadline has been set for Thursday, July 8, when Gasparovic plans to summon the opening parliamentary session.
"I'm extremely honoured to accept the task of forming a government. I'll do my utmost to make sure that the government will be a government for citizens, an open one, which will be able to say that it has been a successful one after four years," said Radicova. She restated that the centre-right parties have already came to an agreement on the programme items that they aim to include in the new government manifesto.
"For us, Slovakia's trust and a dignified life for people is the number one priority. We will be a government of civil responsibility and co-operation, and I invite all people of good will to join in this co-operation," said Radicova.
The centre-right parties are due to meet on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the coalition agreement, including the allocation of individual ministries.
