FoE-CEPA Urges Radicova to Halt "Overpriced PPP Highway Projects"

Ponicka Huta, June 22 (TASR) - Friends of the Earth-CEPA and other civic organisations grouped within Ekoforum are urging the likely new Prime Minister Iveta Radicova to make sure that the new Government will immediately halt the squandering of public money vis-a-vis public-private partnership (PPP) highway construction projects, TASR learnt on Tuesday.
According to the organisations, in the June general election the new Cabinet was bestowed with a mandate to put a stop to the 'tunnelling' of public funds on overpriced ventures, most notably the highway PPP projects.
"The highway programme and PPP projects were decided on at a Cabinet level and no scope was given to public participation or transparency in the process," said Elena Patoprsta of Ekoforum's anti-corruption working group.
"We're afraid that the current Government's rushed post-election sealing of contracts concerning the first round of PPP projects on the D1 highway was purpose-built. Contracts closed in such an irresponsible manner may pose a great deal of risk for both the economy and ecology," she added.
