Beblavy: Slovakia Should Look to Scandinavian Model for Inspiration

Bratislava, June 21 (TASR) - The manifesto of the future government should reflect the so-called Scandinavian model, SDKU-DS MP Miroslav Beblavy said at an international anti-crisis conference held in Bratislava on Monday.

"The values upheld by countries like Denmark or Sweden represent our priorities - namely, improving transparency, have a modern education system, equal opportunities for everyone, and development based on innovation and qualified workforce," Beblavy told TASR.

He thinks that these issues will become priorities of the government about to rise after the June 12 parliamentary election, along with economic revival and public finances consolidation. "It's impossible to live beyond our means, as we need to pursue development in terms of what's affordable," he said.

Another way to improve economic growth, according to Beblavy, is to be more open to the world economy and globalisation. "These strategies, however, call for greater transparency, a qualified workforce, a solid knowledge-based economy and a functioning state," he stressed.

The new government will also focus on research and development as well as more efficient linkage between the education system and labour market needs, said Beblavy. When asked whether having SDKU-DS vice-chair Ivan Miklos head up the Education Ministry would be beneficial to such a development strategy, Beblavy said that he couldn't answer. "I can't make comments on any personnel issues. However, SDKU-DS boasts the most comprehensively worked out plans for the education system and any minister from the ranks of the party, including Miklos, would introduce significant changes within the field, especially in terms of the university education system," he said.
