Bratislava, June 21 (TASR) - The plans to finalise the construction of the R7 highway is likely to be included in the draft manifesto of the emerging new Slovak Government, according to Christian Democrats (KDH) Jan Figel.
His party - together with three other centre-right partners (SDKU-DS, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and Most-Hid) - is currently trying to get acquainted in terms of their programme goals.
Figel confirmed for TASR on Monday that the southern highway is among the topics being discussed behind closed doors at the moment. "The southern road is part of what we want to deal with. The road network is a key thing to boost the economy and attract investments – even in the (much-neglected) south."
However, he said that not only selected sections, like the southern one, should be given the green light for construction, and a "comprehensive" approach should be taken. When it comes to what the should be preferred in the immediate future, Figel said that both east-west and north-south routes are top priority.
Finalisation of the R7 highway, leading across the southernmost districts of Slovakia – with their big share of ethnic-Hungarian population – was highlighted by Most-Hid chairman Bela Bugar as one of the crucial conditions on which his party would never backtrack on if it is in the Cabinet.
