Slota Confirms He's Ready to Offer Resignation at SNS Fall Congress

Bratislava, June 15 (TASR) - Leader of nationalist SNS Jan Slota confirmed on Tuesday that he's ready to have his top post in the party voted on. "Sure I'm ready, why not?" Slota told journalists. The vote is likely to take place at the party congress set for September.

"We've discussed the results of the parliamentary election, and we've come to the conclusion that there will be an assembly in September," said Slota, dropping a cryptic hint that SNS's election result – on 5.07 percent, a loss of roughly a half of its voter support in 2006 – can be viewed as a success of "someone who was constantly disrupting the party" rather than as a failure of the people in SNS.

SNS vice-chairman Jan Mikolaj said that the congress will elect the new party leadership, and it can't be ruled out that Slota will be re-elected. The current education minister further said that he has no information on any of Slota's rivals, but isn't considering running himself, however. Former construction minister Igor Stefanov stressed that Slota hasn't resigned, but only let the congress decide on his future. "He has my full confidence," said Stefanov.

First vice-chair of SNS Anna Belousovova said it was premature for the moment to say whether she would run for the leading post in the party. "No such thing has been discussed, not even the agenda of the congress," she said.

Another SNS vice-chairman Rudolf Pucik informed that the congress will take place on September 12.
