Radicova Becomes SDKU's Official Candidate for Premier Post (Update)

Bratislava, June 15 (TASR) - Iveta Radicova has become the official candidate of SDKU-DS for the post of Slovakia's next prime minister, the party presidency decided unanimously on Tuesday.

SDKU chairman Mikulas Dzurinda, when asked whether Radicova will make a good prime minister, said that "we're not at school to mark candidates, we're in politics".

The presidency further decided that the team that will conduct post-election negotiations with Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Christian Democrats (KDH) and Most-Hid will be made up of Radicova, Dzurinda and party vice-chairman Ivan Miklos.

"I'm thankful for the trust the party has shown in me. I'll proceed in a way that is responsible, pragmatic, professional, human and with the support of strong teams," said Radicova. The presidency also declared that all negotiations conducted by SDKU-DS on forming the government will be tailored to Slovakia's needs and problems. "The programme's priorities will form a basis for further potential co-operation with other parties," said Radicova, who will head the talks.

The four right-wing parties will also form a working commission to gain data and basic proposals from the political parties. "I'm convinced that the solutions Slovakia needs to address its problems are clearly set. We'll surely reach an agreement," Radicova said in response to the question whether she expects a disagreement between the parties over the government's future manifesto. She stressed that the election is over, and the parties will respect the decision of the voters. "They (the voters) have given a mandate to the centre-right coalition," she said.

However, Radicova refused to talk about the personal nominations to ministries. "The issue of how power will be divided bears no importance to me at the moment; we won't even open talks about this," claimed Radicova, adding that SDKU-DS plans to win the favour of people by addressing their problems.

She also confirmed that the party received a formal invitation for negotiations with Smer-SD. "We'd like to thank for the invitation; however, we decline it."

The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) negotiating team will be led by party Chairman Richard Sulik and Vice-Chairs Juraj Miskov and Jozef Mihal, the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) will be represented at the talks by Chairman Jan Figel, Parliamentary Caucus Chairman Pavol Hrusovsky and Vice-Chair Daniel Lipsic. Party chairman Bela Bugar and MPs Zsolt Simon and Laszlo Solymos will negotiate on the part of Most-Hid, with the first official meeting set for Tuesday evening.
