Newly-elected VUC Governors Meet with Fico

Bratislava, December 8 (TASR) - The third higher territorial unit (VUC) elections have shown how difficult it is to make the public aware of what the local governments do and their importance in running things in a democratic state, Prime Minister Robert Fico said at a meeting with the newly-elected VUC governors on Tuesday.

"We can't be content especially with the low election turn-outs, hence, the public administration needs to improve in terms of the information flow," said Fico.

To this end, he added, high-quality and skilled employees are needed. According to Fico, it's necessary to not only secure further education of employees, but also increase the qualification and educational activities of MRPs (members of regional parliaments). Fico stressed that the VUC (higher territorial unit) MRPs need to have standard knowledge of the legal and economic affairs of the regional parliaments in order to work effectively.

Four VUC Governors have been able to defend their posts and get re-elected in the first round of elections on November 14. Zdenko Trebula has been re-elected VUC governor in Kosice region, Tibor Mikus in Trnava region, Milan Belica in Nitra region and Juraj Blanar in Zilina region. In the second, run-off round on November 28, Pavol Sedlacek has been re-elected in Trencin region and Pavol Chudik in Presovo region. Vladimir Manka has become new VUC governor of the Banska Bystrica region and Pavol Freso has been elected for the same post in Bratislava region.

SDKU-DS MP Freso, the only VUC governor who was not supported by Smer-SD, also attended Tuesday's meeting at Fico's office. However, Manka, who is still holding a position in Brussels as an MEP, was not present.
