Police: Election Calm, Only Minor Incidents Occurred

Bratislava, June 13 (TASR) - From the perspective of the police, the general election on Saturday was calm, with only minor incidents emerging here and there, Police Corps Vice-president Stanislav Jankovic said at a Central Electoral Commission (UVK) press conference on Sunday afternoon.

The police had bolstered police patrols especially in areas inhabited by Roma in eastern Slovakia, where problems usually emerge during elections – most often involving vote-buying.

"There were no serious violations of public order (in Slovakia)," said Jankovic. Only two criminal complaints have been filed with respect to the election, one concerned vote-buying and another alleged 'interference' with the course of the election, said Jankovic, without stating any further details.

As for damaging the memorial to the Trianon Treaty recently erected by the Slovak National Party (SNS) in Komarno (Nitra region), this act hasn't had a direct connection to the election, said Jankovic.

The police also recorded two incidents at polling stations in eastern Slovakia, with several drunken people attempting to take part in the election without proving their identity. Also, an unknown perpetrator on the eve of the election set a billboard of one of the parties in Bratislava alight, said Jankovic, adding that the police are investigating the case. [The incident occurred on Landererova St. (across the road from the TASR headquarters) on Friday evening and involved a Smer-SD billboard. Before the fire-fighters arrived on the scene and quickly tackled the fire, the face of Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska had been set ablaze - ed. note.]
