Trencin, December 8 (TASR) - Monday's session of academic senate of Trencin's Alexander Dubcek University (TnUAD) did not proceed in accordance with the University Act, therefore it is invalid, said TnUAD rector Miroslav Mecar on Tuesday.
"In my reaction to information in the media concerning the academic senate session, I decided to file a lawsuit against the ruling of (my) recall and the invalidity of the session, since it violated the University Act," said Mecar. "The session was presided over by a man with a criminal record," claimed Mecar without specifying the name of the person.
"I'd like to point out that this is incompatible with the high-ranking functions of academe, with moral and ethical principles linked to academic privileges and freedoms," reads Mecar's statement.
The academic senate of TnUAD proposed (via the education minister) the recall of Mecar on Monday in the wake of a scandal about 'express degrees' being granted.
An inspection carried out by the Education Ministry at the University found that there were serious mistakes made by the management including the rectorate, said Education Minister Jan Mikolaj on Monday.
The university must put things in order so similar mistakes don't occur in the future, said Mikolaj, adding that in view of this he considers the proposal to recall the rector from his post to be appropriate. He said that the protocol from the inspection will be available within two or three days, while the ministry will then present it to the Academic Senate of TnUAD.
