Nemeth: Hungary Open to Dialogue with New Slovak Government

Budapest, June 13 (TASR) - Hungary's Government is ready to talk with the centre-right government that is set to emerge from Saturday's general election in Slovakia, and regrets that the ethnic-Hungarian SMK party failed to make it into Parliament, Hungary's Foreign Affairs Ministry state secretary Zsolt Nemeth stated on Sunday.

"Congratulations to the winners, we're pleased that the centre-right parties have prevailed," said Nemeth, adding that this means an end to the rule of magyarophobes Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and Jan Slota (Slovak National Party/SNS).

The change at the helm of the Slovak politics has done away with hurdles in dialogue between Hungary and Slovakia, said Nemeth. He recalled a New Year's speech from 2003 by the-then parliamentary chairman Pavol Hrusovsky (Christian Democrats/KDH) that outlined the scope of the future co-operation.

Nemeth also lamented the failure of SMK to get into Parliament. "SMK hasn't been eliminated due to the (Hungarian) dual citizenship legislation. If it had been the case, Fico would have remained in power," said Nemeth, adding that it was rather the decisiveness of SMK's rival Most-Hid in distancing itself from Fico that convinced ethnic Hungarian voters. (About a week before the vote, SMK leader Pal Csaky said that SMK was open to the possibility of forming a coalition with Smer-SD - ed. note.)

Nemeth stressed that his FIDESZ party is still open to dialogue with SMK, which it supported in the election campaign. "Most-Hid has to decide itself whether to take part in the Hungarian-Hungarian dialogue," added Nemeth.
