Radicova Calls on Parties to Abandon Dirty Tricks in Election Campaign

Bratislava, June 11 (TASR) - Opposition SDKU-DS election leader Iveta Radicova on Friday called for all political parties to abandon unfair practices in the election campaign.

Radicova appeared before reporters after Prime Minister Robert Fico's (Smer-SD) press conference, during which he claimed that an absolutely illegal campaign aimed at scandalising Smer is currently taking place in Slovakia.

"SDKU-DS is leading a positive campaign about solutions; we're fair and don't resort to dirty practices. It's unacceptable that the premier describes Slovakia as an undemocratic country ... it's doing harm to Slovakia's good name," she said.

Fico on Thursday presented a copy of print materials allegedly sent out by the extra-parliamentary Party of the Democratic Left (SDL) that allegedly contain Fico's forged signature. In Fico's name a flyer recommended that people vote for SDL to help the party to get into Parliament, as SDL also shares leftist values. On Friday, Fico was outraged at a bumper sticker that he showed to journalists, which contain Smer's recommendation NOT to vote for SDL this time. The premier said that as much as 300,000 pieces of the bumper sticker were produced, and they are set to be applied on cars in Slovakia Friday night.

Turning to Fico's claim that the Party of the Democratic Left (SDL) is in fact connected to the rightist Opposition, Radicova said that this is beyond reason. "SDL is attacking SDKU-DS as well, what would be the rationale for this? We ourselves have taken a loan for the campaign, so I don't know from which resources we would use to fund a leftist party that is attacking us," said Radicova.
