President Warns of Tough Times Ahead and Urges Slovaks to Go to Polls

Bratislava, June 10 (TASR) - Days away from a general election on June 12, President Ivan Gasparovic appealed to people to exercise their civic right to vote as Slovakia is experiencing politically strained times – without specifying what he envisages.

"We are facing hard times, so I am urging you to vote. Your vote will be not only be one for politicians but also an expression of support for national and state interests," Gasparovic told citizens.

Gasparovic urged voters to select those representing their interests, the candidates whom they trust to be able to live up to what they promised during the campaign.

He underscored that the key purpose of democratic elections is to have a state guaranteeing citizens social securities, work, prospects and good place in the family of European nations. "Let us vote those who will do their best to ensure that we can continue to love our homeland," he said.

With respect to the situation the country finds itself in after the recent floods, he asked election organisers to be helpful and forthcoming vis-a-vis the people in the stricken areas so that the voting can proceed smoothly, and not cause any needless concerns for people.
