Bratislava, June 10 (TASR) - The Hungarian Government has given Slovakia's ethnic-Hungarian party SMK €177,000 (50 million forints) to help people in areas affected by the devastating floods, SMK chairman Pal Csaky confirmed for TASR on Thursday, adding that he views this as a generous gesture and a display of European solidarity.
According to Csaky, the financial aid won't only go to ethnic-Hungarians living in Slovakia, but to Slovaks as well. The money was transferred to SMK's account opened for the purpose of collecting money for flood victims. "The first sums were provided by us, SMK MPs, also from the party's finances and it's true that the Hungarian Government provided 50 million forints for this purpose," he said.
It will be SMK who will decide how the financial means will be re-distributed. "We'll divide it on a territorial basis. We'll disclose who is given the financial means and I'm convinced that people of Slovak nationality will get some as well," assured Csaky.
Csaky said that he isn't worried about the accusations that SMK is an extended hand of the Hungarian Government or even of its head Viktor Orban. "Only a personally deformed and (mentally) small person can have reservations towards providing somebody with help if they need it. I think this would be totally inappropriate," he added.
