Government Wants Cuts in Money to Parties for Votes in Elections

Bratislava, June 9 (TASR) - Political parties, movements and coalitions should receive lower state contributions for the votes that they are given in parliamentary elections, the Government decided on Wednesday, approving amendments to the Act on Political Parties and Movements and the Act on Parliamentary Elections.
At the same time, this year's contribution for parties should be cut and paid in three instalments.
The money saved on parties, estimated at around €4 million, should be used to finance aid provided to people who suffered losses as a result of the extensive floods that hit many areas of the country in late May and early June.
The proposed amendment to the Act on Parliamentary Elections stipulates that parties that gain more than 3-percent support in the elections will receive 0.75 percent of the average nominal salary for every vote cast in their favour, 25 percent less than under the current system.
The legislation should be dealt with soon by Parliament via a fast-tracked procedure.
