Fico: First €6.03 Million Going to People Affected by Floods

Bratislava, June 9 (TASR) - People most affected by floods in late May/early June should receive financial aid from the state, Slovak Premier Robert Fico said at a press conference Tuesday, promising that €6.03 million will be distributed in the first round from the €25 million aid package allocated for humanitarian aid by the Government.

The resources meant for helping people purchase the most necessary items will go to 12,175 households in 383 villages. According to Fico, the speed with which the cheques will be delivered is up to Slovak Post now.

Fico added that the Government, along with the Interior Ministry, will draw up a plan of disbursing further gradual compensation packages. He pointed out that the financial aid is also being disbursed by the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Ministry, which is planning to distribute some €800,000 among 1,320 persons.

The severe floods that hit Slovakia recently are prompting calls for legislative changes, according to Fico. Therefore, the Government will discuss amendments at its Wednesday session, he said, adding that the Government will also try to gain resources from the European Solidarity Fund to cover some of the water damage.

According to Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska, Parliament, too, will discuss the amendments at its extraordinary session set for Thursday (June 10). The amendments are expected to pass with ease, as all the Coalition parties have voiced their support for the cause.
