Presov, June 7 (TASR) - A new section of the D1 highway between Presov and Svinia was opened on Monday in Presov, with €96 million required to build a 7.5-kilometre section provided by the European Investment Bank and the state budget.
The ceremonious opening was attended by Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska, Premier Robert Fico, Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny and National Highway Company General Director Igor Choma.
"We must be glad for every new kilometre of highway that gets built. People who travel in this region know that the new highway section will reduce the transport load and significantly contribute to the road safety in this part of Slovakia," said Fico in his opening speech. According to the police stats, 218 accidents took place around Zupciansky mountain in 2004-09, claiming the lives of nine people.
The new highway section was built by Inzinierske Stavby Kosice, and features nine cloverleafs. According to Choma, the interchange built at the west city limits of Presov represents a technologically unique project for central Europe.
