Money for Political Parties to be Used For Infrastructure Repairs

Presov, June 7 (TASR) - The Slovak Government will draw up a new legislative proposal to help secure financial resources for alleviating damages that the public infrastructure suffered from this year's floods, Slovak Premier Robert Fico said on Monday in Presov after holding talks with Presov and Kosice regional governors.

Fico said that this will be done via the amendments to Act on Political Parties and Movements and the Act on Parliamentary Elections.

"We'd like to propose that approximately €4 million of money originally allocated to political parties in proportion for the number of parliamentary seats they get in the parliamentary election should go immediately to the regions affected (by the floods)," said Fico.

Upon election, this money is supposed to be given to political parties, which gather more than 3 percent of votes in a parliamentary election. The resources will be drawn from the sum allocated for the June 12 parliamentary election (to be disbursed based on their standing in the vote).

Fico expects that there will be no problems with drawing up and passing the amendment at the Government's session he plans to convene on Tuesday or Wednesday (June 9). Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska said that the process of gathering MP signatures is already underway to have an extraordinary Parliamentary session convened as early as on Thursday (June 10) to discuss the amendments in a fast-tracked procedure.

The money should go mainly to Presov and Kosice regions. Presov region PSK Governor Peter Chudik said that 12 bridges have been damaged in Presov region, with repairs calling for some €4 million. Another €8.5 million is needed to repair the damaged roads.
