Floods: Situation Stabilised, Water Falling, Regions Counting Damage

Bratislava, June 6 (TASR) - The stabilised flood situation, with water-levels falling in all streams in Slovakia since Saturday night, is being used by Slovak Water Management Company (SVP) employees to clear up the damage.

According to Lubos Krno, spokesman of SVP in Banska Stiavnica, the work mainly involves blocking holes in dams and strengthening them, bolstering river banks with stones, clearing river beds so that water can flow without obstacles, and the removal of silt.

Krno said that SVP employees have begun look into the extent of the damage caused by the floods, so that they can submit a report to the state authorities as soon as possible.

The situation in Kosice region is stabilised, water has dropped everywhere. The fire brigade was forced to intervene at several places in the region overnight, however, evacuating several people from Nizna Mysla whose houses were flooded, for example. In Sady nad Torysou, a dam overflowed and several houses were flooded as a result. More than 50 people had to be evacuated and the fire brigade was forced to remove fallen trees from under a bridge.

A dam was also leaking in Cana, and the fire brigade pumped water from houses as well as from a football field.

The Zitava River in Nitra region was much calmer on Sunday, said Igor Sadovsky, mayor of the village of Mana. "We have dug through the dams and the water started flowing away from the flooded areas, water-levels are dropping, he told TASR on Sunday, adding that it wasn't possible to pump water from houses because the ground water-level was too high. "The situation has stabilised and now we're counting the damage," he said.
