Bratislava, June 6 (TASR) - A few years ago, Slovakia had very high energy demand in comparison to EU-member states, but the ratio has improved, general director of the Economy Ministry's energy section Jan Petrovic told TASR on Sunday.
"Over the past few years it has been possible to lower energy demand, even if it is currently still quite high, which is due to the structure of (Slovakia's) industry," stated Petrovic. "Industry in Slovakia is as it is. We have a chemical, machine and metallurgic industry, which are energy-demanding spheres," he added.
Petrovic said that the Government has introduced certain measures to lower energy demand, such as passing the Energy Effectivity Concept in 2008, as well as the Energy Effectivity action plan, which is a first action plan for the 2008-11 period.
According to him, "the Government also passed other materials, based on which Slovakia should lower its energy consumption by approximately 9 percent in the 2008-17 period when compared to the period between 1990-95, as is set by the EU regulation on energy efficiency," added Petrovic.
