Gasparovic Calls on People to Take Part in General Election Next Week

Bratislava, June 6 (TASR) - President Ivan Gasparovic on Sunday via the media called for people in Slovakia to take part in the general election next Saturday.

"It's necessary to come to the polls and select the candidates in whom you will place your trust and with whom you will communicate throughout the electoral term as to whether they have been keeping their promises," said Gasparovic.

Voters will later be able to "put their representatives against a brick wall and ask questions about why they haven't fulfilled the programme that they voted for," said Gasparovic. Those who ignore the election, however, won't have any right to criticise the government, said the president, adding that the right to vote should be viewed more as a duty.

The president pointed to the current situation in Greece, where people are protesting against recent moves carried out by the Government in Athens. It may have been those very protesters who voted for the current governing politicians, he stated.
