Roma in Eastern Slovakia Attack Mayor Distributing Food After Floods

Jurske, June 6 (TASR) - While food was being distributed on Saturday to Roma in the flood-hit village of Jurske (Presov region), a 29-year-old Roma male without any evident reason attacked mayor Gustav Misalko (who is also a Roma and a LS-HZDS member), Presov Regional Police Directorate spokesperson Magdalena Fecova told TASR on Sunday.

The offender was arrested by the police. Fecova further reported that during the arrest, however, the disorderly crowd attacked the police patrol and the mayor with hoes, axes and pieces of wood, and also threw stones. The situation calmed down when further police patrols arrived on the scene. The police then detained another 12 people. Police patrols also remained in the village during the night and throughout Sunday.

The population of Jurske is 766, of which 521 are officially Roma. The unemployment rate in the village stands at 98 percent.
