Kosice, June 5 (TASR) – The situation in Kosice area has not changed for the worse overnight, despite dramatic forecasts, Slovak Water-management Company (SVP) official Dusan Mydla told TASR on Saturday morning.
"The flood wave moves to lower areas, Hornad is currently culminating in Kosice, and the riverbed is full. There can be a problem until the water drops. We expect (the high water) to move to south of Kosice in the afternoon, which will yet again significantly worsen the hydrologic conditions in villages Nizna Mysla, Zdana and Cana," explained Mydla.
Mayor of Nizna Mysla Marian Karvansky on Saturday morning ordered evacuation of inhabitants living near the Hornad river due to the rising water level caused by the Ruzin dam release.
In Nizna Mysla, massive erosions damaged dozens of houses on Friday, leaving many people, who will not be able to return to their damaged houses, homeless.
Early morning on Saturday, the evacuation commission in Kosice obtained information from the Ruzin dam management that the volume of inflow into the Ruzin 1 pond comprises 475 cubic metres per second, while the outflow stands at 480 cubic metres per second, which is a significant drop in comparison to Friday night. Due to positive prognoses concerning the dropping of water levels as the weather conditions have improved, the evacuation of parts of Kosice can be terminated, reported the crisis management team in Kosice.
Around 500 evacuated people from the town of Stara Lubovna (Presov region) can also return to their flooded homes, since the water level on river Poprad dropped by 90 centimetres in this area overnight.
The flood situation in Kezmarok (Presov region) area has stabilised, some of the villages are still cut off, however, and cannot be accessed at the moment. Peter Spisak from the crisis management team in Kezmarok told TASR that they are currently working on emergency scheme for the inhabitants of Jurske, Ihlany and Holumnica.
