Slovakia's Unemployment Rate Up Nearly 45 percent Y-o-Y in 1Q10

Bratislava, June 4 (TASR) - There were 407,100 unemployed people in Slovakia in the first quarter of this year, 44.9 percent higher than in 2009, the Slovak Stats Office reported on Friday.
The figure for the first quarter of 2009 was 126,100 lower than that in 1Q10. The current unemployment rate stands at 15.1 percent, up 4.6 percentage points on the year.
The number of long-term unemployed increased by 61,000 to 217,700 in the first three months of this year, although their share of all unemployed people went down by 2.2 percentage points to 53.5 percent.
At the same time, the number of short-term unemployed (jobless for a period of up to one year) went up by 138.7 percent, which represents 45,200 people in real terms.
More than 80 percent of the jobless in Slovakia were those with apprentice, basic and secondary education.
