Floods: Parts of Kosice Evacuated, Hornad River Rising

Kosice, June 5 (TASR) - Police corps have launched evacuation of Dzungla district and a hypermarket Tesco in Kosice, TASR was told by director of Kosice Fire and Rescue Brigade (HaZZ) Jozef Fedorcak on Friday night.

The reason of the evacuation is the rising level of the Hornad River and the fear of possible spilling out of its banks.

Next to Dzungla, Kosice district Krasna is also in danger, with 886 people from 12 streets currently being evacuated. According to mayor of the Krasna district Marek Kazimir, large amounts of water – up to 500 cubic metres per second - are being released from the Ruzin dam, causing the Hornad to swell. This is a pre-emptive measure since the inflow into the Ruzin 1 pond amounts up to 630 cubic metres per second. The flood wave is expected to hit Kosice around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

The level of the Ipel river in Sahy (Nitra region) already flooded the bridge leading to the border crossing with Hungary, which had to be closed due to possible structure damage. Inhabitants are prepared for evacuation, which should concern about 2,000 people.

In Bratislava, the Danube River started to spill out on the left bank side in the area of Stary most (Old Bridge). Water has also flooded small areas on the left bank side in Bratislava's neighbourhood of Petrzalka. According to Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU), the level of Danube reached 810 centimetres in Bratislava and 773 centimetres in the borough of Devin, triggering a second-degree flood alert.
