Slovak Koruna Banknotes Can Be Changed in Banks Only Until Dec 31

Bratislava, December 7 (TASR) - It will no longer be possible to change Slovak koruna banknotes at Slovak commercial banks as of the beginning of next year, said Slovak central bank (NBS) spokesperson Jana Kovacova on Monday.

"After this date (December 31, 2009), it will be possible to change Slovak banknotes into euros only at NBS," said Kovacova.

The central bank will change koruna banknotes without any deadline, but koruna coins will no longer be exchanged after December 31, 2013. Exchanges will be carried out free of charge, said Kovacova, adding that commercial banks have the right to demand that coins and banknotes be sorted according to their nominal values.

"The central bank points out that when it comes to changing Slovak banknotes and coins whose total amount exceeds €15,000, banks and NBS are entitled to demand that the exchange be announced in writing at least one working day in advance," said Kovacova.

According to the latest statistics from NBS, more than 21 million koruna banknotes and almost 397 million coins are still in circulation, and banks have exchanged more than 111 million banknotes and 232 million coins since the beginning of 2009. This represents more than €150 million, which equates to 96.8 percent of the money in circulation on December 31, 2008.
