SaS: Levy Bonus Useful Tool to Clean Up Mess in Social System

Bratislava, June 3 (TASR) - Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) rejects claims that the idea of introducing a so-called 'levy bonus' isn't a serious intention, with SaS vice-chairman Jozef Mihal telling TASR on Thursday that the levy bonus would be a sound tool for bringing order to Slovakia's social system.

Mihal was responding to claims made by LS-HZDS vice-chairman Jozef Habanik earlier in the day that SaS is making unrealistic promises in the run up to the June 12 general election, including the one involving the 'levy bonus'. "The levy bonus is an I'll-take-you-to-the-Moon kind of promise," said Habanik at a news conference, claiming that roughly €1.5 billion would be needed to introduce a levy bonus into the system, while Slovakia must be prepared for cuts in its public finances.

"We've calculated it thoroughly, based on the stats data available. We used this data to set the rates so that the final result was neutral when compared to the current situation," said Mihal, stressing that the bonus has many advantages, including the ability to shrink the number of parameters entering the overall levy system. Mihal said that the bonus is designed to remove the current "chaotic system", which allows many people to avoid paying their dues.

SaS proposes that the new instrument should be introduced in two stages over a period of four years.
