Gasparovic: Serbia Belongs in United Europe

Bratislava, June 3 (TASR) - Slovakia will continue to support Serbia in its integration ambitions, because it believes that Serbia belongs in the EU, President Ivan Gasparovic said at a meeting with Serbian Foreign Affairs Minister Vuk Jeremic on Thursday.

"Security, solidarity and co-operation with neighbouring countries all guarantee that Serbia is well-prepared for EU membership," said Gasparovic. Jeremic thanked Slovakia for its help in preparing his country to join the European community. He also confirmed that induction into the EU remains a top priority among Serbia's international policies.

As for NATO, Jeremic said that Serbia plans to remain a neutral country, and because of this, won't apply for NATO membership. Minister Jeremic is convinced that Serbia's neutrality won't threaten the stability of the Western Balkans, much like the neutrality of Sweden hasn't threatened the stability of Scandinavia.

Jeremic also thanked Slovakia for its opposition to Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence. According to him, the Kosovo issue should have been addressed with a dialogue and not on a unilateral basis. Jeremic also praised the ethnic-Slovak community living in Serbia. "It's an absolutely loyal minority, with a positive relationship towards its state," he said.
