Baska Says Slovakia to Contend for UNFICYP Commander

Cyprus, December 7 (TASR) - Defence Minister Jaroslav Baska and Chief of General Staff of Slovak Republic's Armed Forces general Lubomir Bulik led Slovakia's official delegation on a visit to the national contingent in the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) on Monday.

Baska told reporters that Slovakia intends to stage a bid for UNFICYP Commander. "Over the years of serving in this mission, Slovak soldiers made a name for themselves. In the course of next year the Commander of the UNFICYP is to be replaced so we intend to contest the position," he said.

Bulik suggested that the delegation included the representatives of parliamentary committees who had familiarised themselves with the soldiers' activities.

Delegates brought along ingredients for a Christmas cabbage soup, soccer jerseys as well as Christmas greetings from children in primary schools around Slovakia.

Slovakia, currently, has 196 soldiers stationed in the Cyprus mission, still shy of the 210 approved in parliament. The country does not plan to add contingents to the mission although other nations are considering to do so.
