Flood Situation Still Critical Around Spisska Nova Ves

Spisska Nova Ves, June 2 (TASR) - The flood situation around Spisska Nova Ves (Kosice region) hasn't changed, with levels of Hnilec and Hornad rivers still on the rise, Spisska Nova Ves District Office's head of crisis team Viliam Stubna said on Wednesday.

Stubna added that the worst situation is in the villages of Svedlar, Mnisek nad Hnilcom, Velky Folkmar, Kojsov and Gelnica (Kosice region). "There are flooded houses in these villages, with waterlogged local roads and damaged bridges," said Stubna.

According to mayors of villages built on the drain side of the Ruzin dam, the situation has become more dramatic in the afternoon. "Water is spilling over the dam uncontrollably now. The upper and middle parts of our village are flooded," Velka Lodina mayor Peter Lukac told TASR.

He added that this situation can be compared only to the 1974 floods. "Personally, I don't remember anything like this," said Lukac. According to him, 120 people from the Roma settlements have been evacuated. "Some 20 houses are in water, also a couple of summer houses and basements of the District Office," he said.
