Kosice, June 2 (TASR) - Heavy rains have caused flooding in some parts of eastern Slovakia, putting the regional capital of Kosice on high alert and with crisis management staff at the district office calling a state of emergency across the region.
"The Kosice Anti-Flood Commission and Crisis Staff meeting early on Wednesday found that water levels in smaller streams are now falling after overnight rain. The Hornad River, however, remains on a third-degree alert due to a great deal of precipitation at its upper end and is expected to rise," said Katarina Jantosovicova of the city council.
"All roads were passable in the morning, but some in the surrounding area were partly or fully blocked as a result of trees falling off the drenched slopes, such as on the road to Jahodna..." she added.
Both bodies were due to meet again at 1 p.m.
