Mikolaj Expected to Approve Status of Another Two Universities

Bratislava, December 7 (TASR) - Zilina University and the Slovak Agriculture University in Nitra should be added to a list with six other universities that have held on to their university status, according to a recommendation issued by the Accreditation Committee (AK) on Monday.

"We've agreed on this unanimously," AK chairman Lubor Fisera told TASR. The decision is now expected to be approved by Education Minister Jan Mikolaj, who indicated in October that he would respect AK's recommendations.

Zilina University had problems meeting one of the six criteria required by AK - that there should be enough lecturers for the number of students. The same shortcomings were also mentioned in the cases of Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra and the Economic University in Bratislava. Decisions on these universities should be made by February.

University status has so far been approved for the Veterinary Medicine University in Kosice, the Technical University in Zvolen, Comenius University in Bratislava, the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, the Technical University in Kosice and Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice.

Other required criteria concern the quality of research and a sufficient number of doctoral students.

A total of 27 Slovak universities have already begun the process of accreditation, with six private universities still waiting for it.
