Special Rep for Western Balkans Won't Be Appointed for Now

Brussels/Belgrade, June 1 (TASR-CORRESPONDENT) - The European Commission denied on Tuesday that the name of the new EU special representative for the Western Balkans will be announced at a session of EU High Representatives on Wednesday.

According to a Belgrade daily Novosti, two candidates have a chance of getting the post - current Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak and British diplomat Paddy Ashdown.

"No decision has been taken on this matter. This issue is subject to ongoing talks and it's related to setting up the European External Action Service. This point, i.e. appointing the special representative (for the Western Balkans), isn't part of the agenda that should be discussed by representatives of EU states and states of the Western Balkans (on Wednesday). This is also why it is irrelevant to speak about any names for this post," said Angela Filote, spokesperson of the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy.

Both of the aforementioned candidates have experience in the Balkans, including as High Representative of the International Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lajcak occupied the post between 2007-09.
