Marcincin: SMEs Neglected in Slovakia

Bratislava, May 31 (TASR) - The potential of small and medium-sized enterprises is currently being neglected in Slovakia, Christian Democrats (KDH) vice-chair for economy Anton Marcincin told TASR on the sidelines of a KDH-organised seminar entitled 'Recovery of Economic Growth' on Monday.
According to former central bank (NBS) vice-governor Martin Barto, moderator of the seminar, SMEs constitute the backbone of Slovakia's economy. "There's relatively few (SMEs) in Slovakia, even though we know that they're the main source of employment in Europe," said Barto. He said that Slovak SMEs would certainly be helped by a reduction of the administrative burden, payroll deductions reform, support of e-government and a more flexible labour market.
The organisers of the seminar further presented an idea of co-operation between Slovak and German companies, with several banks – most notably Eximbanka – interested in funding the project. "Several German firms have problems surviving due to the high costs of doing business. We in Slovakia are able to produce, but we don't have the same competitive advantages of German firms. Through mergers we'd save both parts of both German and Slovak companies," said Marcincin, adding that labour productivity would also go up.
