Dzurinda Wants to Repeal State Citizenship Amendment after Election

Bratislava, May 26 (TASR) - SDKU-DS Chairman Mikulas Dzurinda will attempt to repeal the amendment to the Slovak State Citizenship Act passed by the Parliament on Wednesday if SDKU-DS becomes part of the government after the June 12 parliamentary elections.
SDKU-DS representatives hold an opinion that it's better to reject the Hungarian Law on Dual Citizenship. Dzurinda's amending proposal, rejected by the Parliament on Wednesday, said that Slovakia refuses to recognise any law that violates generally respected and valid rules on granting citizenship. "The second paragraph (of SDKU's amending proposal) says that Slovakia doesn't recognise the legal effects of the Hungarian law," claimed Dzurinda.
The SDKU-DS Chairman believes that he would be able to persuade the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) after the election to join his initiative. The amendment to Slovak State Citizenship Act, according to Dzurinda, works against Slovakia's interests, as it may lead up to the emergence of a new minority of Hungarian citizens with permanent residence in Slovakia.
"We can't drive our citizens out," he pointed out to the amendment, which introduces an automatic loss of Slovak citizenship for people who choose to acquire foreign citizenship. Furthermore, Slovak compatriots living abroad will lose the option of having dual citizenships in future as well, he noted.
"If Mr. Orban gets up on the wrong side of the bed tomorrow and submits a similar ugly piece of legislation, no one in Slovakia can stop him. However, we can stop these laws from taking effect on Slovakia's soil. Slovakia can't dance to Mr. Orban's tune," said Dzurinda.
