Bratislava May 26 (TASR) - According to chairman of the opposition SDKU-DS party Mikulas Dzurinda, the passing of the proposed amendment to the State Citizenship Act by the Slovak Parliament (in response to similar legislation adopted in Hungary) is likely to create a new minority in Slovakia - people who live in the country but are exclusively holders of Hungarian citizenship.
"By this construction, as presented by the Government, we're wiping Slovak citizens out of here due to the senseless attitude of (Hungarian premier-to-be) Viktor Orban," said Dzurinda, who was also critical of the Hungarian plans, however. "The initiative brought by Budapest has disturbed us, and we reject it. It's a provocation making more sense in our neighbour's interior than in ours," said Dzurinda in the parliamentary debate on the amendment, which is being dealt with via a fast-tracked procedure.
Chairman of the co-ruling Slovak National Party (SNS) Jan Slota also joined the debate. "The Slovak National Party could well handle this minority in a quick way. Maybe it's going to be a few thousand people, and maybe they'll be joined by a few hundred confused Gypsies. Those are the ones with no proper relation to their homeland. If such a small group forms, and acts against Slovakia's interests, they'll be expelled and go to where they are citizens - to Hungary," said Slota.
Mojmir Mamojka of the main coalition Smer-SD praised the Government for taking what he called "a highly considerate and absolutely candid political approach".
