Bratislava, December 6 (TASR) - The governing-coalition Smer-SD party has become a standard social-democratic political party that is fully respected in international terms, according to a party statement adopted by delegates at the Smer convention in Bratislava on Sunday.
The document also states that the party has managed to incorporate the centre-left part of the Slovak political spectrum, and constitutes a strong rival to the disintegrated conservative and liberal parties.
"Never during its existence has (Smer) been debilitated by internal disputes, and not a single MP has left its parliamentary caucus. Smer is a stable, trustworthy, promising and predictable political entity," reads the statement.
According to the delegates, since assuming power in 2006 the party has been thorough in pursuing a policy of a modern, social-democratic state that intervenes in economic processes in a reasonable manner.
"During the crisis, Smer-SD has refused to pass the burden of damage to ordinary people. Slovakia as a small country enjoys international respect. By our decisions to halt privatisations and to refuse to recognise independence for Kosovo we're showing our sovereignty," states the document.
