Figel: KDH Won't Form Government with Smer-SD After Election

Bratislava, May 24 (TASR) - Dubious financial dealings of Smer-SD party and its reluctance to provide an explanation led the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) to decide that Smer-SD has been ruled out of any possible post-election co-operation, KDH Chairman Jan Figel said after the session of the party leadership held on Monday.
He described the decision as being for the good of Slovakia and for the sake of restoring law and order.
As recently as last week, KDH said it was willing to accept the prospect of a coalition with Smer-SD as a last resort. This no longer holds true. "KDH is really serious when it says no to Smer," said Figel, according to whom the party is even willing to run the risk of winding up in Opposition. KDH had already excluded LS-HZDS, too, from any potential co-operation, and no discussions are envisaged with Slovak National Party (SNS), added Figel.
"A week ago, documents emerged that incriminate Smer-SD of illegal financial dealings, which cast doubts on the legitimacy of democratic institutions and public procurement processes, as well as the granting of mandates and public posts," said Figel, adding that KDH filed a criminal complaint.
"This information (indicating that sponsors bought favours) raises the suspicion that Smer-SD party has been created as a business company with an eye towards doing business," claimed KDH Vice-Chair Daniel Lipsic.
"We'll do our utmost for the victory of a responsible right-wing alternative in the June 12 parliamentary election. To this end, we are calling on all of our voters and sympathisers (to vote). We invite all those who care about the healthy development of Slovakia to take part in the fight against corruption," said Figel. When asked whether KDH would proceed the same way in the case of SDKU-DS party, if the General Prosecutor's Office had proved the allegations of its dubious financing processes, Figel replied that SDKU-DS Chairman Mikulas Dzurinda took political responsibility for the case and relinquished his spot on the slate.
