Gay Pride March Organisers Condemn Politicians' Silence

Bratislava, May 24 (TASR) - Romana Schlesinger, organiser of the Rainbow Pride gay parade in Bratislava at the weekend, accused Interior Minister Robert Kalinak of not telling the truth on TV Markiza's programme "Na telo" when he said that the organisers themselves chose to cancel the original route of the march through the Old Town area.

Conversely, she said, the police have let it be known that they were incapable of ensuring the safety of the marchers because too many opponents of the gathering were present on the Old Town streets.

Schlesinger blamed the hate rhetoric of politicians and the silence of others for the violence at the event. According to her, it is sad and disconcerting that the Government in 2010 is unable to secure all people's constitutional rights.

She condemned Kalinak's recommendation that marchers should pay for their own bodyguards, as well as the fact that no government or parliamentary party representatives denounced the extremist attacks.

She further stated that the organisers have decided to stage another Rainbow Pride march in Bratislava in 2011.

Saturday's Rainbow Price Bratislava 2010 was the first-ever march organised by gays and lesbians in Slovakia.
