Labour Ministry: Extension of Collective Agreement Won't Cause Lay-offs

Bratislava, May 21 (TASR) - The Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Ministry is convinced that the planned extension of the current Collective Agreement in engineering and electronic industry won't cause lay-offs, ministry spokesman Michal Stuska told TASR on Friday.

The situation in the two sectors has been tense, with trade unions pursuing the extension of the collective agreement, and employers having a different opinion.

"The process will take several months, and all the parties involved will be able to comment on it," said Stuska. It is the Labour Ministry that will make the final decision on the matter.

The ministry has preliminary agreed with extending the agreement in engineering, which would mean an increase in salaries in more than a thousand companies.

The KOVO trade union, an umbrella organisation with plus-70,000 members from a wide range of industrial and service workers, is demanding that the agreement be extended in the electronics industry as well. If they succeed, this will concern 220 companies employing 72,000 people that would have to rise the wage tariffs by 2.4 percent. So far only 50 companies have agreed with the move.

Representatives of the Republican Union of Employers (RUZ) have cautioned that if the extension enters into force, mass lay-offs and bankruptcies may follow.
