Slovak Petrol Prices Highest Among Neighbours

Bratislava, May 20 (TASR) - Slovakia has the most expensive petrol compared to its neighbours, including Austria, with Poland selling at the cheapest rates - at an average of 11 cents per litre less than in Slovakia. Diesel is cheaper only in Poland, where it sells for 4 cents less, said Tomas Novotny of internet portal natankuj.sk, citing the European Union as a source.

"Over the past week, we've moved from 14th place to 15th in the list of petrol prices less tax, but fell one place to 17th in the list of diesel prices," said Novotny, referring to lists of EU countries with the cheapest prices at the top.

Compared to the average for the European Union, of which Slovakia has been a member since May 2004, Slovak petrol is 9 cents per litre cheaper, but diesel is more expensive by 7 cents. "Petrol less tax in Slovakia is 0.5 cents more expensive while diesel prices are consistent with the average of European Union," said Novotny.

In the European Union, petrol and diesel prices have risen most in Greece this year - by 44.8 cents (41.6 percent) and 31.2 cents (31.4 percent) respectively. The lowest price increases for petrol have been in Hungary, by 7.2 cents or 6.19 percent. Malta has seen the lowest increases for diesel - 7 cents or 7.22 percent.
