Plans to Construct Trans-contintental Megaproject in Western Slovakia

Malacky, May 20 (TASR) - A logistics and transport megaproject involving a trans-continental transit terminal should be constructed by 2050 in the so-called golden triangle of Central European cities Vienna-Bratislava-Brno, author of the project Juraj Jancin said on Thursday.

A considerable part of the water and air junction should be located near the town of Malacky (Bratislava region). "It will be a ... junction, which isn't especially needed by the region, but will be of extraordinary importance for the needs of Eurasian and global goods exchange. It'll be a unique complex, able to shift Slovakia's position into a new dimension not only within the European Union," said Jancin.

The project, which has a Slovak and foreign background, will be funded from private resources, with the preliminary cost calculated at €37 billion. "(The construction of) the first operational stage should be launched in 2014 and completed in 2020," said Jancin.

The projects also bring certain risks, as some of its parts should be located on the territory of a current military area, and areas with natural gas and water reservoirs.

"This project will completely change the environment, and will have an immense effect on the population, infrastructure and economy. Therefore, it will be necessary for the authors to draw up impact studies vis-a-vis the environment, population, social system, education and other spheres," said mayor of Malacky Jozef Ondrejka.
