Kandahar, May 20 (TASR) - A new airfield terminal has been opened in Kandahar, Afghanistan on Thursday thanks to Slovak sappers, with company commander Major Dalibor Jelinek ceremoniously handing over the keys for the departure terminal to KAF base commander Gordon Moulds.
The airfield was under reconstruction since March this year. The Slovak sappers changed the entrance doors and fire exits, built offices, check-in desks, fire-retardant walls near the staircases and the wooden constructions to separate passenger areas. As well, they painted the whole interior of the building.
In addition, the troops also did welding works, manufactured perimeter fencing and built the concrete barriers around the airport to protect the site against mortar attacks.
According to Slovak Armed Forces spokesman Milan Vanga, the Slovak sappers are proving their worth in Afghanistan every day. "As of December 2009, they have cleared 19,528 squared metres of mines by hand and 33,680 square meters by mechanical means," said Vanga.
